As many of you have already heard, it is true
that Rod did take a plea in the San Diego case.
Of course, there are many, many emotions equated
with this, but for the most part you can all
guess how we feel. Up until the very end, we
were wavering, but it is now after the fact
and we are resolved to make peace with the upcoming
journey we face. This was not a victory by any
means, but a way to move on with our lives and
give our kids the time they need and deserve
with a present dad.We could have gone on fighting,
but in the end our little ones would have paid
the biggest price….. It is, so they say,
an achilles heal.Below is a open letter from
Rod that he released to the public to share
why he made his decision:

Yesterday was a difficult day. We all knew
what Eric was facing, and we understood the
vehemence with which the government was pursuing
this case. But nothing could ever fully prepare
us for the kind of heinous sentence that Eric
received. It is clear from the reports in
the media and the statements made by the US
Attorneys that Eric was entrapped and used
as an example to anyone who dares to dream
of how things could be different in this world

Civil Rights Outreach Committee Press Release:
A federal jury was unable to reach a decision
on conspiracy and transportation of a destructive
device but convicted Briana Waters, a 32-year-old
mother and violin teacher and former resident
of Olympia of arson. The government charged
her with being a lookout in connection with
the May, 2001 arson of the Center for Urban
Horticulture at the University of Washington
in Seattle. If convicted on all counts, Waters
would have faced a sentence of 35 years. The
two informants who testified against her in
the case, who admitted to participating in the
arson, face between three and seven years. Ms.
Waters' sentencing is set for May 30.

This is a eulogy, two years too late, for my
friend William Rodgers — known to friends,
family and the movement as Avalon. Avalon took
his life on December 21, 2005. This was just
two weeks after our arrests in the Operation
Backfire case and, by no coincidence, the Winter
Solstice. In his absence, much has been made
of his role in our Earth Liberation Front (ELF)
group. Not surprisingly, the prosecutors in
the case have painted him as a leader who recruited
young, impressionable activists to do his bidding.
This is not only false, but also insulting to
the younger people in the case, who did get
involved on their own.

Update 11/12/07:
As some of the freshness of the new environs
begins to fade and the specter of at least 5
more years of imprisonment looms, their resilience
is likely flagging to some degree. The generous
spate of donations that continued throughout
their time in Oregon has abated, and there is
concern on their part that there won't be money
for them to get their needs met.
