Update 3/30/08
solidaritywithsadieandexile@gmail.com

Hello All,
Thanks and praise to so many of you for your continuing moral and financial support for Sadie and Exile. Generous donations and creative fundraising efforts have kept them in commissary and books throughout the winter and their spirits remain very strong. We join them in sending deep appreciation for all the correspondence, books and funds they have received.

As noted in an earlier message, Sadie and Exile have expressed their desire to have a website set up. We recognize how useful this would be and we've appreciated the multiple offers to assist in this process. Their one imperative is that any website be congruent with their philosophy and aesthetic and therefore any design work needs to be coordinated with Exile directly. Obviously, this is an area where they want to have agency and control at a time when so much of their autonomy has been stripped away. If you have web design skills and can volunteer some of your time towards the creation of a website that will honor these important individuals, please write as soon as possible to Exile and express your interest in working with him:

Nathan Block #36359-086
FCI Lompoc
3600 Guard Rd,
Lompoc, CA 93436
U.S.A.

Also, Sadie has recently requested particular images to decorate her locker and bulletin board: owls, stags and mermaids are high on the list, though she said as well she'd love to see trees, bark, fungi, mushrooms and branches.

Joyanna Zacher #36360-086
FCI Dublin

In sadly related news, another individual has recently been caught in the web of the "Green Scare." Briana Waters was recently found guilty on two counts of arson related to a politically motivated action that took place at the University of Washington in 2001. This fire has been linked to the string of arsons that took place along the West Coast said to be committed by members of the Earth Liberation Front. Briana has steadfastly maintained her innocence, and was convicted primarily by the testimony of two admitted arsonists who provided questionable information to the government in return for drastically reduced sentences. The judge who heard the case consistently denied defense motions, and serious questions about the proceedings remain for many. An appeal is likely. Briana was taken from her family (including her 3 year old daughter Kalliope) on Thursday immediately after the verdict, due to spurious allegations that she was a "flight risk," and is currently being held at a detention center in Seattle awaiting sentencing. Being separated from her partner and daughter in this way must be excruciating. We encourage you to write her when possible to express your support for her. Please do not mention her case in any way. A simple expression of empathy will undoubtedly be a balm for her at this time...

Update 9/16/07
solidaritywithsadieandexile@gmail.com

Sadie and Exile now have updated booklists on Amazon.com, albeit rather short ones due to restrictions on the number of books the are allowed to have. They are both always really grateful for the gift of reading material. If you can, and do decide to send one, it would be great if you could let us know so we can try to keep the lists updated to avoid duplicates. Thanks!

Update from Supporters of Sadie and Exile (Joyanna and Nathan) 7/11/07
solidaritywithsadieandexile@gmail.com

Warm Greetings,

This is the first update from the Supporters of Nathan and Joyanna for some time. We have been waiting to send further updates until they could speak for themselves. Firstly, Nathan and Joyanna have elected to now return to the names that they chose for themselves years ago, Exile and Sadie. Although many friends have been surprised never having heard them before, these names are simply the names that express who they feel themselves to be (and were used in all areas of their lives). Now that the nightmare of prosecution is over, Sadie and Exile are excited to have this part of their lives back and pleased to be able to end the charade of referring to themselves by names they no longer relate to.

After having been sentenced on June 1st to 92 months each, they are both faring well as they transition into the bizarre labyrinth of Federal Prison. They have elegantly endured this first month since their absurdly punitive sentencing. Finally out of Lane County, they find themselves in different circumstances on the move to their final prison assignments.

Currently, Sadie is still at Multnomah County Inverness Jail with no indication how long she will be held there while waiting to hear where she will end up. She has been uplifted by many wonderful friends visiting, receiving mail, phone conversations, better food and even getting to sit in the sun to read. For the most part, she is in great spirits.

Joyanna Zacher I.D. #703794
(MCIC) Multnomah County Inverness Jail
11540 NE Inverness Drive
Portland, OR. 97220, USA

Exile is still at the Sheridan Detention Center where, although he cannot have visitors, can make some phone calls, and remains resilient and upbeat with adequate reading material. He has just recently learned that he has been designated and, although yet to get the final word on location, he believes it will be in the Southwest as he was given a "low" designation. When he will be moved and where he will be housed remain questions.

Both have asked that folks hold off on sending books but always welcome mail. We strongly encourage you to send images at this time, particularly pictures and drawings of the natural world as well as spiritual imagery and depictions of spiritual practice. Words may not be the most useful tools for assuaging the alienation they must both be feeling at this time.

As always, donations for their ongoing support help to ensure that they have adequate money in their commissary funds and on their phone accounts which are both critical to their long term survival. All past fundraising on their behalf has been greatly appreciated and helped keep their spirits sharp and their minds strong. Thanks to all who have helped with this, individually and collectively. Any continued support can be sent to:

First Epistle: Phoenix From the Flames

By Sadie and Exile (prosecuted by the state as Joyanna Zacher and Nathan Block)

Now that we have been sentenced we have the opportunity to ease our reticence concerning our situation and would like to candidly address a few points.

Firstly, we would like to offer our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered support and solidarity with us since we were kidnapped by the state and held prisoner for these past sixteen months. To each and every individual who has offered material support through monetary, postal or other means, and also to those who through their voice or in their hearts have stood in alignment with us, and in opposition to cooperation with or apology to the state--we would extend a most honest thanks. Your flame burns bright.

It has been extremely heartening to know that there are those who stand with us when it seems that so many whose strength we once considered unassailable have had their roots dislodged and their honor torn asunder. Those who hear the call of Direct Action should not fear the prospect of imprisonment if those, or those similar to, who have supported us continue to act in such a responsible and dignified manner in support and solidarity with those of us who have attracted the wrath of the state. Again, a great thanks to all who have assisted us and continue to do so.

That said, it has come to our attention that perhaps through naivete and perhaps through the deliberate spreading of misinformation, there has been some confusion over who amongst the indictees is worthy of prisoner support; meaning to us: who has NOT made statements implicating others, as the purpose of such statements is the further prosecution and imprisonment of others. Let us make this clear: all those amongst the indictees who have been apprehended, other than Ms.
Waters, Mr. McGowen, Mr. Paul, obviously the authors of this piece; the so-called Ms. Zacher and Mr. Block, and sadly Mr. Rodgers, have dishonored themselves, their families and the very lineage of struggle which they themselves were once an integral part of, by becoming vicious traitors and handmaids of the state. To actively support these indictees who have been apprehended but not aforementioned is to support not only our incarceration but to wish that same fate upon many others currently living as fugitives or being sought similarly. If there are those amongst you reading this who feel the need to make
excuses for those responsible for our imprisonment, we would ask you to refrain from offering a Janus-faced 'support' to us also, as it is completely antithetical to the reasons for our captivity.

Those who have signed their cowardly allegiance to the state and through the state to those powers that seek to prostitute and
obliterate the natural world, as well as strip-mine our souls, clearcut our minds and pollute our very being, are not only directly
responsible for our imprisonment, having given the state our physical description, names and legal names, along with statements on our involvement in Direct Action, both witnessed and in conjecture.

No, they hold not only that burden of responsibility. Some of them hold responsibility, and the others a deep dishonor, for the death of a dear friend and one of the most gentle and pure-hearted beings ever to be found, namely Avalon (or Bill Rodgers).

Most importantly, those who now work in collaboration (under the innocuous term 'cooperation') with the same powers which they once felt compelled to raise themselves in opposition to, have in their wicked apostasy, desecrated the sacred covenant that exists between nature and those who align themselves with the very Element of Fire and the very Essence of Destruction in the defense of the Wild.

Perhaps these vile turncoats deserve compassion, in the same way that all creatures deserve compassion, and indeed they once deserved acclaim for their physical deeds, but now they deserve neither praise nor forgiveness, for in the hour when the struggle returned for them, when the predator had once again become the prey, they failed in spirit and resolve cowardly breaking long held oaths and begging for mercy from their captors, hoping to gain leniency by offering as a sacrifice to the alter of a perverted 'justice' their former friends, trusted colleagues and any dignity they once held.

Let the spirits of imprisonment, treason and weak delusion haunt the atrophied vision of those who would turn their backs to the flame of Green Fire that burns in all our beings; and let those of us who heed the calls so often ignored stand upright, with clear vision, whether illuminated by the great Sun or by a more obscure Light, which rides with the night terror with all creatures of the hidden hours: the clawed, the winged, the hoofed, and also with those beings referred to by the euphemisms of 'the ancestors', 'the fair folk', or indeed, the 'elves'.

Update from Supporters of Joyanna and Nathan 1/20/07
supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com

Warm Greetings to All in this Time of No Light,

We wanted to send an update to let folks know that Nathan and Joyanna are doing well, remaining strong and resolute in the face of a prison sentence that would keep them incarcerated until 2012 or beyond. As always, we marvel at their integrity and steadfastness, and endeavor to allow their imprisonment to be as comfortable as possible.

With that in mind, we want to let you know that this coming Thursday, JANUARY 25th, will be Joyanna's 29th birthday. It will undoubtedly be a very difficult one despite the incredible support she feels. Joyanna continues to demonstrate courage and tremendous strength nearly a year after her arrest, and receiving mail from those near and dear has been a critical piece in sustaining that attitude. Please help mark this day with your cards and letters. Even though we know how appreciative she would be of the gift of books, at this point, she has all that she is allowed, so please hold off.

Guidelines for what is and is not appropriate to mail can be found at:
http://www.ecoprisoners.org/howtohelp2.htm

We are imagining her day filled with images and words sending incredible love.

Also, we are encouraging contributions to their commissary funds which dipped low this last month. Commissary allows inmates to purchase toiletries and other helpful items, as well as augmenting the notoriously poor food situation by providing snacks and other foods for sale. This weekly trip to the "store" is a big highlight in the life of someone behind bars, and if you have anything to give, it would be much appreciated. You can donate in one of two ways:

1) Donations can always be sent to Nathan and Joyanna's support fund. This fund is maintained by Nathan's mother, Maureen, and is used at the discretion of Joyanna and Nathan. Checks and money orders can be sent to:

S.N.J.
c/o Maureen Block
881 Oak Hill Rd.
Swanville, ME 04915

2) Money can also be sent directly to them for their commissary fund. To do this, simply enclose a check or money order in an envelope and mail it directly to them. The jail will collect your money and provide N. or J. with a receipt letting them know about your gift. If your envelope included a letter or a card, this will be provided with the receipt.

Here are their addresses:

Lane County Adult Corrections
101 W. 5th Ave.
Eugene, OR 96740

Nathan Block #1663667
Lane County Adult Corrections

Another important matter concerns the upcoming sentencing hearing that they face on the 25th of April. If you can, please respond to our separate appeal for letters of support by February 15th, 2007. (please email supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com for information regarding Letters of Support)

Be well.

Update from Supporters of Joyanna and Nathan 11/18/06
supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com

Friends and supporters,

As you may already know, after many long months of ongoing, careful consideration and negotiation, the four non-cooperating Green Scare defendants, Joyanna, Nathan, Daniel McGowan and Jonathan Paul appeared in court on Thursday, November 9th, and entered "guilty" pleas as part of a global resolution agreement with prosecutors. Withdrawing their motion to obtain materials from possible National Security Agency (NSA) surveillance, this agreement means that they have accepted their personal participation in these environmentally motivated crimes, but have not, and will not, provide information on, inculpate or reveal the identities of anyone else, remaining steadfast and united in their unswerving dedication to not taking the easy way out.

This was obviously an extremely difficult decision collectively made by these four after previously only being offered two choices by the government: to cooperate by informing on other people, or go to trial and possibly face life in prison. This plea now allows them to accept responsibility while standing by their principles. For Nathan and Joyanna, the government will seek a sentence of 8 years, while their lawyers have asked for no more than 63 months. If cooperating defendents who have plead to similar charges receive less time, then Nathan and Joy's sentences must reflect that. The date for their sentencing should be set at the next status hearing scheduled for December 14th.

This sentencing stage remains critical. They will still need to fight for the least possible sentence as the government has said that they will will seek a "terrorism enhancement" which could potentially increase jail time up to 20 years. Lauren Regan of the Civil Liberties Defense Center (PLEASE support her work: www.cldc.org ) has said, "We believe the government is seeking this enhancement because that way they can say, 'we haven't caught any real terrorists—Osama or anything—but we did catch these 'eco-terrorists' in the Northwest.'"

We are extremely proud of Joyanna and Nathan for staying true to themselves and finding the most honorable route possible out of this intractable situation. We continue to stand behind them 100%. It now seems likely that our beloved will not breathe a free breath until sometime between 2010-2013. So, as you can see what initially seems like good news and a "best-case scenario," is also tragic beyond comprehension. We ask for all to hold in their hearts the beauty of Joyanna and Nathan and their pain and all who may be grieving at the sudden reality of their extended disappearance and the relinquishing of hope.

We hope too, that you will recognize that this is also an extremely important time to step up any support efforts you were making on Nathan and Joyanna's behalf. It is essential that they know that they are still supported and respected, and that their support community will not simply disappear at this important juncture. We heartily encourage you to write letters to them, to send them color copies of images (animals, nature, mystical iconography are suggestions), and to let them know that we're still here and will continue to be. If you have considered doing any benefit work on their behalf, this is an excellent time. Support the Green Scare International Day of Solidarity on December 7th (http://www.greenscare.org/).

To those who have already helped financially, thank you so much! We will continue to raise funds in order to meet ongoing expenses which now include approxiamately $5,000. per defendent in non-negotiable court fees.

The address where funds can be donated, in care of Maureen Block, Nathan's mother and steward of their joint defense fund is:

S.N.J.
c/o Maureen Block
881 Oak Hill Rd.
Swanville, ME 04915

Once again, we thank all of you for the care, energy, prayers, and solidarity that you have given. We respect your courage to support Nathan and Joyanna when they were facing such severe consequences, and we hope that you will be able to continue to support them as they experience this huge transition in their lives. Nathan and Joyanna remain appreciative of ALL the support, visits, mail and books they have received over these past eight (almost nine) months.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns that may come up for you.

Be well.

1. go to: http://powellsunion.com/mainpage.php

2. in the dark blue bar at the very top click the button "powells bookstore" beside the white search bar.

3. now you should see, beneath the dark blue ILWU bar, a lovely greenish-colored bar with a Powells logo . within that bar, beside the words "home" and "your account", you will see "wish list." click on those words.

4. in the center of the page below the option to log-in you should now see "find a friend's list" where you will type (or copy and paste) one of the following addresses: EITHER booksfornathan@gmail.com OR booksforjoyanna@gmail.com

please remember, lane county will NOT accept used books...so even tho powell's gives you the option to purchase used, please send only a new copy. also, please consider choosing just one book to send from one of the lists. thataway, other people may buy a book as well. supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com

Joy and Nathan's motion for release was denied today. A multiplicity of family and friends were again in attendance, and we were able to salute our people as they boarded the bus back to the facility, but it was certainly a sad day to see them returned to their cells. Judge Coffin misjudged Nathan and Joy, citing unsubstantiated vitriol from the prosecuting attorney in suggesting that they posed a "danger to the community."

This is only the first step in an ongoing effort to secure their release. We appreciate all that everyone has done to help, and hope that you continue to pay attention to this case. We will let this list know as further court dates materialize.

I also wanted to alert people to another musical event, occurring on June 6th in the Bay Area, being hosted by the people at katabatik.org. Please check their site for more info if you are in their area.
Take Heart and
Be Well.

Please send urgent letters of support to Joyanna & Nathan to let them know that they are not alone! For more information on sending letters and ideas on things that can brighten their day, please click here!

Update from Supporters of Joyanna and Nathan 5/30/06
supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com

Today, May 30th, saw Nathan and Joy in front of Judge Coffin as he heard their motion for release. The courtroom was filled beyond capacity with friends and family, creating a colorful and lively contrast to the sterility of the chamber. After a lengthy presentation by the prosescuting attorney, mischaracterizing our mild-mannered friends as hardened, murderous criminals, the Judge postponed his decision, citing the need to ponder the situation further. The hearing is to reconvene this Thursday, June 1st, at 1:30 P.M. People receiving this mailing are again encouraged to contact us if you would like to explore carpooling options in order to attend. Joy and Nathan saw many of us in the courtroom today, and we are certain that it was a balm for their troubled minds.

Thanks once again to all who have turned in character reference letters, donated to the defense fund, written letters of support and donated to commissary funds, organized events to raise funds, and kept Nathan and Joy in your thoughts and prayers. We encourage everyone to continue to support Nathan and Joy on all levels. Be well.

Update from Supporters of Joyanna and Nathan 5/10/06
supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com

Hello All,
Great news! Joy and Nathan have been granted a detention hearing, during which a judge will decide whether or not they are to be released on bail. The hearing is set to take place on May 30th at 1:30 P.M. We encourage anyone who is in the Eugene area to attend. Let's pack the courtroom with supporters and let N. & J. know how many people are caring about them.

Contact the support crew for a guide to writing character reference letters. The lawyers have said that they can continue receiving them up until May 23rd, after which the judge refuses to accept them. So, if you have been putting it off for any reason, please take this opportunity to complete them. Remember, it can't hurt for you to write these. If your letter is not appropriate the lawyer will simply not turn it in. It doesn't need to be perfect.
Be well.

Friends,
Attorneys for Nathan and Joyanna are encouraged and appreciative of all the character reference letters they have recieved thusfar. They would still like to gather as many as possible by Friday, May 5th. If you know Nathan and Joyanna and haven't written one, we'd like to ask again that you consider writing and sending one out this week. We're including the information below about what is needed and where to send them.

In other news, there is still no word on the date for the detention hearing but expect learn the date this week. We'll let you know as soon as we know. Nathan and Joyanna have now been incarcerated for nine weeks and your ongoing support has been critical to keeping their spirits up and sustaining them on a daily basis. They both send their deepest appreciation for all the mail and books. Thank you so much! Please continue to include them in your thoughts and write when possible. They are still doing well on books, and we'll let you know when they ask for more.

Once again, here is the reference letter info. Please write one if you haven't already, and if you know others that may not be on this mailing list who would be willing to write letters, please pass along this information. Help us inform the judge that our friends are important members of our community and that we need them back! We have included an attachment with this message which contains a sample reference letter for Joyanna, written by a local friend of hers. This was included just to give you a sense of how easy it is, and to clarify any questions you may have about format. Thanks in advance for doing this!

If you know Nathan and/or Joyanna, we ask that you please consider writing a letter to the judge encouraging her to release him/her on bail. Please mail your letter with your ORIGINAL SIGNATURE as soon as possible. Letters should be sent to Nathan's lawyer, John Storkel, or Joyanna's, Bill Sharp, and not to the judge.

The primary factors that the judge will be considering when deciding whether or not to release them is whether or not they are a danger to the community and if he/she will be a flight risk. Among the things you may wish to write about in your letter are:

(1) How long you have known Nathan or Joyanna.

Update from Supporters of Joyanna and Nathan 4/23/06
For more information, please e-mail: supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com

Joy and Nathan have reported doing as well as could be expected and feeling quite resilient lately. We feel really excited about this, and grateful to all the folks who have sent the letters and books that surely have improved their state of mind. At the moment, both of them have as many books as they're allowed and have asked for folks to hold off on sending more books. Letters, cards, photocopied pages depicting art or information unrelated to their case are of course always welcome.

We have created a bank account to accept donations for their support fund. Any monies donated will be used at their discretion for legal fees, travel expenses, and other unforseen financial obligations that could be releated to the case. We encourage everyone who can do so to donate, and if you know others who are interested please pass along this information. Folks who knew Nathan and Joy here on the west coast have put on benefit music shows as well as a benefit "secret cafe" (an event where food is served in a temporary restaurant inside someone's home and the profits donated). We encourage folks who are feeling motivated to plan events such as this to benefit our friends or others who are facing the juggernaut of legal entangements that these cases represent. Donations can be sent via a check or money order, made out to Maureen Block (Nathan's mother, in constant contact with him and Joy). The address is:

S.N.J. c/o
Maureen Block
881 Oak Hill Rd.
Swanville, ME 04915

Please keep Nathan and Joyanna in your thoughts and prayers as we ask for their freedom.

Please help to support Joyanna and Nathan 3/28/06
Joyanna and Nathan have both been moved around a lot within the last several weeks. Aside from being hard on them, much of their mail has been lost or returned. They have also received very few books, and have lost what had been sent to them while in transit. Please take a few moments to write each a letter of support! Send thoughts, poems, narratives, photocopied pages or images, articles, love letters...anything would be much welcomed. Both have also said that they would GREATLY appreciate books. For books suggestions, please e-mail their support group at: supportersofnathanandjoyanna@gmail.com.In general, Joyanna loves classics and Nathan enjoys books by Henry Corbin. Again, please take a moment to write to them. For information on sending letters and books, please click here.
